There are a number of ways drivers in Georgia can lose their driving privileges. One way is by accruing too many points on your driving record, which begs the question: How are points assessed and what happens when someone accrues one too many?
Georgia’s point system
Points are assessed against a person’s license when they are convicted of any crime listed in O.C.G.A. §40-5-57(c)(1)(A). Some of the more common traffic violations that lead to points include:
- Aggressive driving
- Unlawfully passing a school bus
- Speeding
- Failure to obey traffic signals
- Possessing an open alcohol container
- Using a cellphone while driving
Naturally, the points assigned to any particular traffic violation depend on the danger the crime poses to other drivers and people. Crimes that put lives at risk of serious or fatal injuries are typically assessed higher point values than those with less risk of injury or death.
At what point will the state suspend a license?
According to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, an individual who accrues 15 points in a 24 month period can expect their license to be suspended.
Can points ever be taken off your license?
Yes. Under O.C.G.A §40-5-86, a driver in Georgia may request a reduction in points once every five years. The limit is seven points during this time period and only if the driver has met specific criteria indicated by DDS.
