Types of field sobriety tests issued by officers

Police officers are trained on what to look for regarding potential drunk driving situations on the roads of Valdosta, Georgia. If an officer has reason to believe that you have been driving under the influence, you will likely be subjected to a field sobriety test. There are a few different tests used by officers, each of which takes a look at different areas of your body.

The walk and turn is one of the most common field sobriety tests issued by officers. This test requires you to take nine steps in a straight line, placing your heel to your toe with each step. You then must make a turn on one foot and return to the starting point walking a straight line.

Another field sobriety test is the horizontal gaze. This test requires the subject to follow the finger of a police officer without moving his or her head. The officer will look for the head to move, the eye to jerk back and forth and if the eye remains open during the test.

Subjects who might be under the influence of alcohol could also be asked to stand on one leg during a traffic stop. The raised foot must be held six inches off the ground and the subject will need to do this for at least 30 seconds. This test measures balance, which is impacted when a person is impaired.

Being pulled over for suspicion of DUI can be frightening, even if you didn't have a couple drinks prior to driving. Do your best to comply with the officer and perform the tests requested. Concentrate during the tests because one false move could find you in handcuffs in the back of the patrol car.
